Did you know that about 40 children enter Delaware’s foster care system each year? Well, when Chelsea Gordon’s 5th grade class at Forest Oak Elementary learned this staggering fact, they knew they had to help make a difference. After some brainstorming, the FebruBEARy Drive was born.
Mrs. Gordon reached out to the Kind to Kids Foundation and learned about their Blue Duffel Bag program. The Blue Duffel Bag program was created to give each child entering foster care a bag full of necessities and basic comforts. One of those comforts is a teddy bear. Mrs. Gordon’s 5th Graders loved the idea of collecting teddy bears to add to the blue duffel bags and they were eager to make a difference.
Mrs. Gordon’s class began to spread the word and Forest Oak families and staff, as well as other Red Clay staff, showed an amazing amount of support. Thanks to all of that support and the donations, Mrs. Gordon’s class collected exactly 100 stuffed animals! WOW! What a wonderful effort made from all involved. There are now 100 more children who are able to comfort themselves during this difficult transition. Mrs. Gordon’s class is very thankful for all of the stuffed animals that were selflessly donated. They will surely make a difference in the lives of those who need it most.
