The RBA (Reading Basketball Association) is back in full swing for the 2016-2017 season. The RBA was designed to inspire children to love reading, while also offering them a fun afterschool activity. This year’s reading themes are kindness, compassion, and empathy. Students started this year reading the book “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio. Teams in the league are named after college teams to help encourage all of our students to seek higher education. This year the league consists of eight teams and a cheerleading squad. Over 110 students are actively involved. Games are played on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. This past week we held our annual Saturday tournament. All eight teams played and the tournament was attended by over 500 people. There was a halftime show by “Corey the Dribbler,” a Harlem Globetrotter, who is known as the World’s Greatest Dribbler. There were basketball contests and tons of prizes given away. There was even a Lebron James signed basketball auctioned off and won by fourth grader D.J. Hillis! The RBA continues for much of the year with an All Star game and playoffs coming up in the second half of the year. The RBA’s next adventure is to see the Philadelphia 76ers in December! If you’re looking for a fun time, come watch us after school someday. All are Welcome!
