Elena Delle Donne Visits First State

Elena Delle Donne Visits First State School

It’s not every day when an international sports star comes to town so students at Red Clay’s First State School in Wilmington were especially excited on Wednesday, December 7th when Elena Delle Donne came to visit.

Delle Donne, a Delaware native, Olympic gold medalist and international basketball star came to First State to encourage the school’s students to make exercise a way of life and to teach the students fun physical activities that they can do to maintain a healthy lifestyle. She participated in activities including basketball related games and fitness exercises. Elena Delle Donne said she understands that it can be difficult to exercise and stay fit while dealing with a chronic illness because she personally experienced the problem when she had Lyme disease, a chronic illness.

First State School, located in Wilmington Hospital and part of the Red Clay Consolidated School District is a school for children and adolescents with chronic illnesses who are too ill to attend school regularly. The first school of its kind in the country, First State enables every student to get the medical care they need without missing out on the opportunity to learn and grow with others. The school staff includes physicians, nurses, educators, counselors, psychologists and therapists who oversee each student’s daily needs. Family fun nights, field trips, talent shows, guest speakers, preparation for the prom and the creation of an annual yearbook provide First State students with a well-rounded school experience. School staff help students care for themselves as independently as possible.

Elena Delle Donne, who was born at Christiana Hospital, is a former Ursuline Academy and University of Delaware basketball player. She became one of the most highly sought after women’s basketball recruits and became the 2015 WNBA MVP.

Delle Donne, a spokesperson for Christina Care, also serves as a guest blogger promoting the importance of healthy eating, fitness and active partnerships with doctors and healthcare providers. She came to First State School to give students the message that staying fit is important for their well-being and they can have fun doing it. First State students were thrilled to have the opportunity to host her at their school.
